“What’s our budget?” Just kidding, that’s something to consider but it should not be your first question.
The first question should always be “What are we trying to accomplish?”
I’ve been in this business for over 25 years. For the majority of that time, when I asked a perspective client “why are you looking for a team building activity?” they answered “to reinforce team spirit, alignment, collaboration…”
Trend: These days I’m getting a lot of “I’m not quite sure. My boss asked me to get some ideas.”
Within a few more minutes of chatting about team building the person inquiring on behalf of their boss is frustrated (some have gone as far as dropping F-bombs) because they realize that they have no clue why they have been assigned the task! Waste of time.
I understand why this is happening. Leaders are trying to find ways to create a new company culture, alignment and loyalty in the wake of hybrid work and/or high employee turn-over.
My advice: Leaders please take the lead before delegating! Start with identifying what you are trying to accomplish. From there, it will be much easier to select a meaningful activity.
Trick: Most vendors offering group activities would like to capitalize on your investment into team building by simply labelling it as such. Let’s make sure you get what you’re looking for. What type of programs do your employees need today?
Here is a quick reference summarizing types of programs offered. Start by selecting one type:
Team Bonding. When teams do something lighthearted and fun with the intention of re-igniting that desire and commitment to work together (a.k.a. PureFun). Cost ranges from $25-$75 per person.
Truth: Team bonding activities are not an appropriate solution for teams who need to improve communication, accountability, alignment, trust, engagement, or any of the essential elements required for effective teamwork.
Team Building. Helps teams explore and practice the core competencies required to be an effective team (a.k.a. SeriousFun). An experienced facilitator helps to ensure that the key lessons and desired messages come to the surface. Cost ranges from $50-$185 per person (minimum charges may apply).
Truth: Team building activities will not be well received for groups looking for some time to just relax and have some fun.
Health and Wellness. Provides support for your teammates as they navigate uncertain times and beyond (a.k.a. Fundamentals). Cost ranges from $150-$350 per person.
Truth: Both team bonding and team building may appear superficial and tone deaf if employees do not have the mental health and wellness support they need.
If the person tasked with finding an activity knows the intention of the program, then they will be able to receive a much better sample of activities available. If not, they may be tricked into believing whichever vendor has the flashiest marketing materials or offers the least expensive option.
